For those who are not familiar with Amanda Palmer, here is a little background. Amanda has been a lot of things: an artist, Dresden Dolls singer, songwriter, musician, and crowdfunding pioneer. She is a lead singer and songwriter of Amanda Palmer and the Grand Theft Orchestra.
I sometimes find her public persona troubling, but I appreciate her talent and think some of her songs are pretty awesome.
This said I wanted to share with you her piano-led The Bed Song.
It tells the story of a couple, in exhibits A, B, C, D from the beginning to the end, while using various beds that they own. These beds serve as a metaphor for the state of their relationship.
I find it relatable as I often have problems communicating with the others and I know I’m not alone in that. As we go through life, we start to understand that life is a series of unplanned and challenging changes.
And while we don’t get to choose if we get hurt by changes, we get to choose how we communicate with the others.
The Bed Song reminds us that lack of communication is the cause of many serious problems. Amanda believes that many people don’t ask for help because of the fear of rejection. She explains:
“From what I’ve seen, it isn’t so much the act of asking that paralyzes us—it’s what lies beneath: the fear of being vulnerable, the fear of rejection, the fear of looking needy or weak,” she adds. “The fear of being seen as a burdensome member of the community instead of a productive one. It points, fundamentally, to our separation from one another.”
Communication can make or break the relationship. So, no matter what’s going on- talk frequently, openly, even if it hurts.
